===What is an admin?===
>>**Quicklinks:**
-[[EditAdminsInfo creating/editing admins]]
-[[SettingAdminPermissionsInfo admin permissions]]
-[[ImportAdminsInfo importing a list of admins]]
-[[AdminAttributesInfo admin attributes]]>>Strictly speaking, an admin is a **login** and a **password** which give you access to the administrative functions of phplist (a.k.a. the backend), as opposed to the open and public pages of phplist (such as the subscribe, preferences or unsubscribe pages; a.k.a. as the frontend). The administrative functions of phplist are what appear in the [[PhplistDocumentation main page]] (they include: user and list management, sending messages, etc.)
**All lists are owned by admins**. An admin can own several lists but **each list is owned by only one admin**. To be able to use a list, you must be the admin who **owns** the list. For more on lists, see [[ListAndUserFunctionsInfo What is a list?]] An admin is not necessarily nominative: several people can share the same admin account (in other words, they can share the same login/password). This is important because since each list can only be owned by one admin, sometimes it is necessary for several people to share an admin account to be able to manage the same list(s) of users.
===Different types of admins===
Not all admins have equal rights: some can use all the functions in phplist, some can only use a few functions. These rights are called **permissions**, and they are set by SuperAdmins.
~1) **SuperAdmins:** admins who have **all** permissions on the system. They can create, edit and remove administrators, and change the admins' permissions, including the permissions of other SuperAdmins.
~1) **Restricted Admins:** admins who have **restricted** permissions on the system.
~//Example:// One admin may be allowed to [[SendMessageInfo send messages]], another may be allowed to view [[UserInfo users]], etc. It is important to set the permissions properly depending on the needs of your admin.
For details on admin permissions: [[SettingAdminPermissionsInfo admin permissions]].
===Adding and editing admins===
- phplist allows you to **add or edit admins**. There is no limit to the number of administrators on your system. See: [[EditAdminsInfo edit admins]]
- phplist allows you to quickly create a series of admins by **importing a list of admins** from a tab- or comma-delimited file. See: [[ImportAdminsInfo import admins]].
- Admins can be given **admin attributes**, much like ordinary [[UserInfo users]] which can be included in messages. See: [[AdminAttributesInfo admin attributes]].
